Android M to include update guarantee for Nexus devices?

Google Nexus 7Google is widely expected to unveil the next major version of Android at this week’s Google I/O 2015 keynote. Along with a raft of new features, Google will reportedly announce an update guarantee for Nexus devices designed to let buyers know exactly how many updates they will receive.

According to Android Police, Nexus devices will receive major system updates for two years. Security patches will be provided for a period of three years from the operating system’s release date or 18 months from the date of purchase in the Google Store, whichever is longer.

Google’s new update guarantee will apply to both existing and upcoming  devices. Unfortunately, it means that older Nexus devices, including the Google Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 (2012) will not be updated to Android M but will benefit from security updates for a while yet.

The Google Nexus 5 is good for another update so will benefit from an Android M update later this year. Both the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 which are still available for sale will likely benefit from Android M and Android N updates before entering their security-only update stages.

While Android Police rates the sources of the rumour as “solid,” it warns that Google may or may not make the upgrade guarantee announcement at Google I/O. It may instead decide to wait until a time closer to the launch of the new update (and likely new devices).
