100,000 apps to be ready for Apple Watch launch?

Apple WatchThe Apple Watch is expected to start shipping in April. Expectations are running high with rumours suggesting that Apple has ordered up to six million watches for launch and expectations that it could ship as as many as 26 million in 2015 alone. Consumers are not the only ones with high expectations. Developers are also lining up to offer their apps on the new smartwatch.

Global Equities Research‘s Trip Chowdhry suggests that some 100,000 apps could be ready in time for the Apple Watch’s launch. He bases his estimate on observations at six “Apple Watch-Kit hackathons.” At first glance, the number seems inflated; we’ll see in April if this is indeed the case.

Chowdhry also expects that the US$349 starting price will not be an issue. He explains that, “On an average an Apple Watch user will have 100 Apps installed, and one way to think about it is that the consumer is getting 100 devices for $350 ..i.e. [sic] $3.50 per device.”

As far as sales, Chowdhry suggests that Apple could sell an eye-popping 42 million Apple Watches this year alone. “Since Apple Watch extends iPhone functionality and provides user convenience with ‘Glance’ and ‘Notifications’ to an iPhone User, almost every current iPhone user, which are about 350 million users, will also be an Apple Watch user,” he explains.

Whether we will see 100,000 apps by April, it’s clear that consumers are not the only ones looking forward to the Apple Watch launch.
