When will devices be upgraded to Google Android L?

Google Android logoThe Google I/O 2014 keynote has just wrapped up. One of the key topics was the preview of the next major version of Android that Sundar Pichai had promised. We don’t know the release’s version number or name as Google simply introduced it as Google L. Needless to say, one of the first question on everyone’s lips is “When will my device be upgraded to Android L?”

Google did not give specific timelines for the release of Android L. At this point, the only timelines we have are that Google will release a Developer Preview of the SDK and “early” Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 images tomorrow. There are no timelines for other Nexus devices at this point. Given that Google calls Android L its biggest release to date, it’s likely at this point that it will not roll out until the fall. The fact that images are not ready for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 at this point could be a sign that development is still at a very early stage.

Only one manufacturer has stepped forward with its plans. It’s early yet but HTC has already announced that it will update both the HTC One (M7) and HTC One (M8) to Android L “within 90 days of receiving final software from Google.” Assuming our fall timeline holds true, that would put their update out to the end of 2014 or early 2015.

Android L brings a refreshed and flatter interface with bright colours (based on the new Material Design guidelines), updated notification and multitasking that adopt many design elements first introduced in Google Now. Other key changes include the adoption of the ART runtime compiler, a new Android Extension Pack to improve graphical performance, a 64-bit architecture and further battery life improvements.

Keep it locked on EyeOnMobility for updates on Android L as they become available.
