Despite a decision by Samsung to once again push out the launch its Tizen smartphones, Samsung and partner Intel have sent out press invitations to an event that will put the focus on the oft-delayed mobile operating system. It is set for February 23, the day before MWC 2014’s official start.

The invitation promises “an exclusive sneak preview of the newest Tizen devices as well as an opportunity to learn about the major milestones that the Tizen project has hit since last year’s event.”

While it remains to be seen if Samsung will have any devices on display, one partner rumoured to be bringing a device to the tradeshow is ZTE. The official Tizen website previously listed a “ZTE Geek demo” on its MWC 2014 event page but the reference has now been removed. A Tizen 3.0 demonstration could also be in the cards.

The event will also be attended by a number of Tizen carrier partners, including SK Telecom and LG U+.

The repeated delays that Tizen has experienced is putting the viability of the operating system in question. For example, NTT DoCoMo has reportedly already put its Tizen launch plans on hold. Aimed at entry- and mid-tier level devices, new operating systems such as Firefox OS and Jolla are quickly moving to occupy that niche. The longer Tizen delays its launch, the more difficult it will be for it to establish itself.
