It appears that Sundar Pichai, Google’s Senior Vice President of Chrome and Apps, just got himself a promotion and a not-so-small one at that. Re/code reports that Pichai will take on the lead for all of Google’s core products. That includes search, maps, Google+, commerce, ad products as well as his current portfolio of Android, Chrome and Google Apps. The senior executives who headed up those areas reported to CEO Larry Page until the change but will now report to Pichai instead.
The move is reportedly in response to Page being concerned that Google will become less innovative as it becomes older and larger. The move will allow him to focus on the “bigger picture.” He will also continue to directly manage business and operations as well as newer business units such as Nest, Calico and Google X.
The only core Google product that Pichai will not oversee appears to be YouTube. This unit, essentially running independently, willl remain under the leadership of CEO Susan Wojcicki who will continue to report directly to Page.
Sources report that despite effecitvely becoming SVP for all of Google’s core products, Sundar Pichai’s title will not change. The move certainly sets him up as one of the most powerful executives within Google and the likely heir apparent to Page.
