Startup Vsenn to launch modular Android smartphone

Vsenn teaserThe modular Project Ara smartphone has not launched yet but it is already facing some competition. A new startup out of Finland has announced plans to offer its own take on the modular smartphone concept. Vsenn, co-founded by a former Nokia Android X program manager, promises to “create the worlds [sic] best mobile user experience, through the most secure and regularly updated Android OS platform using modular hardware.”

Vsenn has only so far outlined the broad strokes of its strategy. Its smarpthone will feature three upgradeable modules: The processor and RAM, camera and battery. Interchangeable back covers will offer an additional degree of customizeability. The device will be powered by stock Android with Vsenn to offer guaranteed updates for the next four years. It will be sold unlocked.

On Twitter, Vsenn revealed that its first device will come with a 4.7-inch Full HD display (468PPI) and will measure 124 by 63 by 8.9 millimeters. Future devices will have different screen sizes.

Vsenn is also making privacy and security a priority. It will protect user data with triple layer encryption” and offer free access to a VPN network and secure Cloud.

There is no word yet on when the first Vsenn modular smartphone will launch or how much it cost although the company suggests it will be ” a lower price than the charged by the current market leaders in the industry.”

It all sounds promising but also fraught with more than a few challenges. We’ll keep an eye on the project to see how it evolves in the coming weeks and months.
