Samsung unveiled its second generation smartwatch lineup as Mobile World Congress kicked off. Powered by Tizen, the Samsung Gear 2 (pictured above) and Gear 2 Neo are designed as companions to Samsung smartphones. As such, much of their functionality relies on being connected to a device with a cellular connection. The Korea Herald yesterday reported that Samsung is also working on a new Gear model called the Samsung Gear Solo that would not need such a connection.
Instead, the Gear Solo would be a standalone device packing a universal subscriber identity module (USIM) better known as a SIM. With its own cellular modem, it would be able to make and receive calls on its own.
There is no word on whether the Samsung Gear Solo would be powered by Tizen like the Gear 2 watches or would instead use the new Android Wear that Google introduced last month.
Samsung is reportedly working with SK Telecom to launch the Gear Solo in Korea. A launch outside of Samsung’s home country has not been ruled out but would likely follow some time later if it does occur.
Before the launch, Samsung may still rebrand the Gear Solo as it appears that the name is already trademarked in Korea.
There is no word on when Samsung Gear Solo could launch and what it will sell for.
