The Sony Xperia Z2 made its Canadian debut earlier this month at Bell Mobility and more recently at SaskTel. While it does not support wireless charging, that did not stop Sony from yesterday unveiling two new wireless charging accessories for it. The new Wireless Charging Cover WCR12 and Wireless Charging Plate WCH10 cleverly get around that small Xperia Z2 limitation by working together to help you do away with wires.
The Wireless Charging Cover WCR12, made of synthetic leather, functions as both a folio-type protective case and a stand. With the Xperia Z2 in the Wireless Charging Cover, you can also recharge it wirelessly using the Wireless Charging Plate WCH10 (or any other Qi-compatible charger for that matter). It comes with a light indicator to let you know when your Xperia Z2 is fully charged.
So how does Sony solve the small problem of the Xperia Z2 not charging wirelessly? The case itself adds that functionality and passes the power through to the device using its the dock pins.
Sony sees wireless charging as “an area with huge potential that’s exciting for both consumers and designers.” It promises to continue to build on the potential of this technology and promises more accessories that use it in the future.
Pricing and availability for the Wireless Charging Cover WCR12 (available in black or white) and Wireless Charging Plate WCH10 (available only in black) were not announced. They are expected to launch sometime this summer.
