Sony may have accidentally tipped its hand as to what it will announce at IFA 2014 at its September 3 press event. Rumours have already pointed to the company announcing the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact smartphones, a new and smaller tablet, new lens-style cameras to succeed the Cyber-shot DSC-QX100 and DSC-QX10 lens-style cameras announced last year and perhaps even the SmartWatch 3. A promotional image on Sony’s Facebook page appears to have confirmed both the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact and a new smartwatch.
The image shows a man holding what appears to be a smaller Xperia tablet and wearing a smartwatch. While the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact may be less of a surprise, the smartwatch is more of one especially as it appears to run Android Wear. Sony had previously indicated that it had no plans to use the new Android extension on its smartwatches.
The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact was first discovered earlier this week in a manual for the Sony BSC10 Bluetooth speaker with charging dock. It is listed in it as a compatible product. Little is known about it but it is expected to be an 8-inch tablet. Even less is known about the new smartwatch but it appears that it will come with a square display and a rubber wristband. Judging by the pool in the background, both new devices will presumably be waterproof.
It appears that Sony simply posted the image in error. The text that goes with the image indicates that this is a promotion for the Sony LifeBand.
All in all, it appears that Sony will have a very busy IFA 2014!
