Samsung today unveiled its latest processor, the Samsung Exynos 7 Octa processor. As the name implies, this is an eight core solution with four Cortex-A57 cores for the heavy lifting and four more power-efficient Cortex-A53 cores set up in a big.LITTLE HMP (Heterogeneous Multi Processing) architecture. Throw in a 20nm low power process technology and Samsung claims that the Exynos 7 Octa will deliver a “57% CPU performance increase from the previous generation Exynos, Exynos 5 Octa.”
If the Samsung Exynos 7 Octa sounds like a familiar processor, it’s because it is. It turns out that it’s simply a rebranded Samsung Exynos 5433 Which Samsung quietly released back in September. It appears that Samsung decided to give its new 64-bit chip a bit more limelight by assigning it to its own series.
Other features of the Samsung Exynos 7 Octa include an advanced multimedia format codec (MFC) that supports H.265(HEVC) and UHD output, simultaneous high resolution video and picture capture using front and rear cameras thanks to the built-in dual Image Signal Processor (ISP). Needless to say, it also supports displays including resolutions as high as WQHD and WQXGA.
The Samsung Exynos 7 Octa is paired with a Mali T760 GPU running at 700MHz.
As for devices, you will not have to look further than the Galaxy Note 4 variant used in some markets (the North American variant uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805) to find it already in use.
