Samsung is a company that is not afraid to offer a wide range of devices in a bid to cover every possible market. It was among the first to launch a smartwatch when it launched the Galaxy Gear at last year’s IFA event. It may use this year’s September event to unveil a new wearable device. Citing unnamed company officials, The Korea Times reports that Samsung is aiming to unveil smartglasses at IFA 2014 in Berlin to take on Google Glass. They are tentatively called Galaxy Glass but the company is reportedly not set on a final name yet.
Rather than a standalone device, Samsung’s Galaxy Glass will connect to a smartphone much as the Galaxy Gear does now. It will support functions such as displaying alerts on a transparent or translucent lens, taking phone calls and listening to music. It will presumably only be compatible with other Galaxy devices.
According to one official:
“The new smart glass to be introduced by Samsung is a new concept of wearable device that can lead to an exciting culture of communication. The smart glass will present our aim to lead the new market with proven capability. Wearable devices can’t generate profits immediately. Steady releases of devices are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new markets”
Samsung will likely have some competition when it launches Galaxy Glass. Google is expected to make its Google Glass available more broadly later this year. Sony is also reportedly looking at launching smart glasses of its own this year.
Smart glass technology could also make its way into the vehicle industry where it would be used to present information on windshields and windows rather than on a dashboard.
