Trademarks can sometimes give us hints at what a company could be planning to launch. A look today through the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) website reveals that Samsung has ambitious plans for its Gear brand. Among the new filings are the following:
- Samsung Gear VR
- Samsung Gear Live
- Samsung Gear Kit
- Samsung Gear Blink
None of the filings shed much light on what they could be but we can make a few inferences. The Gear VR is likely Samsung’s own VR headset. The other three filings include descriptions that fit wearable devices such as smartwatches and are likely to be new apps or devices that further broaden Samsung’s wearable app and device portfolio. For example, the Gear Blink could be the name of Samsung’s upcoming smartglasses (which have also been rumoured to launch as Gear Glass).
All the filings are recent with the oldest dating back only to late May.
Samsung is expected to unveil a broad range of new devices at IFA 2014, the event it has used in the past to launch its fall collection of devices. Along with the VR headset and smartglasses, the company is expected to announce the Galaxy Note 4 and the new Galaxy F smartphone.
