Samsung may unveil its first virtual reality headset at IFA 2014 along with the expected Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy F. Developed in collaboration with Oculus VR (now owned by Facebook), it takes a somewhat different approach to implement its solution which is expected to launch as the Samsung Gear VR (as we saw on a recent trademark filing).
Unlike the Oculus VR which is a standalone virtual reality headset, the Samsung Gear VR will essentially be a smartphone accessory. Rather than being self-contained, it will require a docked Galaxy smartphone to operate. Connected via USB, the smartphone will provide much of the horsepower needed to deliver the immersive experience. For example, rather than having its own sensors, the Gear VR will make use of the smartphone’s own accelerometer, gyroscope and processing power to track head motion. The smartphone will also provide the display.
According to an image obtained by SamMobile, the Gear VR will be held in place on your hand with an elastic head band and soft padded cushions on each side of the device. It will also have a navigation touchpad on the right side next to a see through button that will use the rear-facing camera sensor to show the user what’s going on beyond the headset. While Oculus VR is helping develop the software, the hardware is solely Samsung’s creation.
The report adds that Samsung will offer a selection of Gear VR apps through its Samsung App Store. Among these will be apps like Theatre, 360 Player, and Gallery. The Gear VR SDK will also be make available to developers to foster the development of more apps as well.
There is no word on pricing yet.
