Samsung had been expected to launch its new line of Galaxy Tab 4 tablets last week at Mobile World Congress but Unpacked5 focused solely on the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the new Galaxy Gear and Galaxy Gear Neo smartwatches and Gear Fit fitness band. If there was any doubt that the Galaxy Tab 4 line was still coming, it has been put to rest by a new Gear Fit ad. Touting its compatibility with a range of Samsung devices, the ad inadvertently also confirms compatibility with the Galaxy Tab 4 line.
The listing confirms what past rumours have told us: That there would be three models, a 7.0-inch one, an 8.4-inch one and a 10.1-inch one. Specifications of all three models, the Galaxy Tab 4 (7.0), Galaxy Tab 4 (8.4) and the Galaxy Tab 4 (10.1), were all leaked in early February.
The ad also gives us a possible launch window. Samsung’s near Gear wearables are expected to launch as early as the end of March. Assuming that this ad launches at the same time and given that it lists the Galaxy Tab 4, it suggests that the new line of tablets will already be available. If so, an announcement could come very shortly.
According to the latest Gartner numbers, Samsung established itself as the second largest tablet vendor in 2013 behind Apple. Shipments jumped to 37.4 million from 8.5 million in 2012 but it still has a lot of work to do to catch up Apple and the 70.4 million iPads it shipped last year.
