Samsung may have denied that there was such a thing as the Galaxy S5 Prime (or Galaxy F?) but the fact that it regularly pops up in rumours suggests otherwise. A detailed leak earlier this week gave us new details about this device apparently codenamed KQ during development. Despite the report indicating that it was still at “a middle- to late- phase of development,” a report out of Korea now suggests we could see it quite soon. According to Asia Today, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime launch could happen as early as sometime “around June” (according to the Google translation of the article).
At this point, it appears that the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime will come with a WQHD (2560×1440) display and either a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor or an octa-core Samsung Exynos 5430 (or both as variants for different markets).
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime could help Samsung fill out its high-end smartphone product line by offering a new model that would fit neatly between the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4 which will reportedly sport a new form factor. Perhaps more importantly, an announcement in June could allow it to beat LG to the punch when it comes to announcing a device with a WQHD display. LG is expected to unveil the LG G3 in late June with a launch to follow in early July. Samsung launching the Galaxy S5 Prime around the same time would ensure that Samsung has a device in stores able to compete directly against it.
This could turn out to be a very interesting summer for flagship smartphones.
