Samsung Mobile today announced that it is jumping into the already crowded music streaming business with Samsung Milk Music. The new service is free and comes with more than 200 stations and more than 13 million songs. It is powered by Slacker.
“Milk Music introduces a fresh approach to music that reflects our innovation leadership and our focus on creating best-in-class consumer experiences,” said Gregory Lee, president and CEO of Samsung Telecommunications America and Samsung Electronics North America Headquarters. “We’re offering consumers amazing, rich music experiences built around what matters most to them and their lifestyle.”
The Milk Music app does not require log-in and comes with a distinctive dial design to make it “a more intuitive and natural way to listen to music.” It also comes with “My Stations” for personal stations based on individual favourite songs and albums. Pre-set stations can be customized with the “Fine-Tune Station” feature that lets users adjust settings such as popularity, novelty and song favourites.
The new service comes with a few catches. It should come as no surprise that it only works with Samsung devices. The Milk Music powered by Slacker is available from Google Play for the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note II. It will also support the Galaxy S5 when it comes out in April. It remains to be seen when support for Samsung tablets will be added.
Sadly for Canadians (and the rest of the world), Samsung Milk is only available in the U.S. for now.
Samsung is promising to bring exclusive “unique music programming from top selling and emerging artists” to Milk Music in the near future.
