Google I/O 2014 kicks off next week and the new Android Wear extension for wearables is expected to feature prominently. LG and Motorola are widely expected to showcase their LG G Watch and Moto 360 smartwatches at the event. But they may have to share the spotlight with another device. CNET has learned that a Samsung Android Wear smartwatch will also be unveiled at the event.
The report adds that Samsung has quietly been working on two Android Wear models after being announced as one of Google’s partners on its new initiative. One is powered by one of Samsung’s own chipsets while the other uses a Qualcomm processor. It’s unclear if one or both will be announced though.
Past rumours have suggested that Google I/O 2014 attendees are likely to receive an LG G Watch at the event. They could also walk away with a Samsung one according to one of CNET‘s sources.
Samsung unsurprisingly declined to confirm the rumour but did say in a statement that it’s “committed to relentless innovation and new products are always in development.”
Samsung began its latest push into the smartwatch market last fall with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Gear powered by Android. Earlier this year, it launched the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo (pictured above) along with the Gear Fit, all of which are powered by the Tizen operating system. It has also upgraded the original Gear to Tizen.
Google I/O kicks off on June 25, 2014 with a keynote by Sundar Pichai, Google’s Senior Vice President of Chrome and Apps. Rest assured that we’ll bring you all the developments the same day.
