After a false start last week, Google I/O 2014 registration kicked off today without a hitch. The one week delay allowed Google to make some final tweaks to its new process. Unlike years past, there was no scramble to register in the first hour as Google has changed it from a first-in-first-out to a lottery one.
Registration will be open from today until April 18. Once the registration window closes, Google will randomly select attendees. Notifications will be sent out next week to those who will get to attend this year’s event.
Google has yet to provide any hints about what it has in store for this year’s event. It has often unveiled new hardware, apps and services. For example, last year saw the introduction of the Google Pixel Chromebook and the Google Music service (still not available in Canada) as well as new versions of Google Maps and Google+. On tap this year could be a new version of Android (Android 4.5?) and a new Nexus tablet (Nexus 8 or Nexus 9 built by HTC perhaps?) although recent rumours have hint at a later event for both.
Google I/O 2014 will run from June 25 to June 26 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Tickets are selling for US$900 for general admission and US$300 for for academics.
