Qualcomm announces 64-bit Snapdragon 810 and 808 processors

Qualcomm Snapdragon processor

Qualcomm today announced two new mobile processors, the Snapdragon 810 and 808. These will complete the company’s LTE-equipped 64-bit processor lineup that so far comprises the Snapdragon 410, 610 and 615. They promise to deliver “the ultimate connected mobile computing experiences in video, imaging and graphics.”

“The announcement of the Snapdragon 810 and 808 processors underscore Qualcomm Technologies’ continued commitment to technology leadership and a time-to-market advantage for our customers for premium tier 64-bit LTE-enabled smartphones and tablets,” said Murthy Renduchintala, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and co-president, QCT. “These product announcements, in combination with the continued development of our next-generation custom 64-bit CPU, will ensure we have a tremendous foundation on which to innovate as we continue to push the boundaries of mobile computing performance in the years to come.”

Rather than using its own Krait architecture, both new processors will use ARM’s new ARMv8 instruction set. The Snapdragon 810 will be an octa-core chipset pairing four Cortex-A57 cores with four Cortex-A53 ones. The Snapdragon 808 will be a hexa-core processor with two Cortex-A57 and four Cortex A-53 cores. Both will pack a Qualcomm Cat 6 LTE Advanced modem and Qualcomm RF360 Front End Solution, allowing for speeds up to 300Mbps and 3x20MHz Carrier Aggregation and support dual-stream 802.11 ac MIMO over Wi-Fi.

A few other characteristics of the Snapdragon 810 include:

  • Adreno 430 GPU with support for OpenGL ES 3.1
  • Support for LPDDR4 memory
  • Support for 4K UHD (3840×2160) displays
  • Support for camera sensors up to 55MP
  • External 4K display support via HDMI1.4
  • Support for Bluetooth 4.1, USB 3.0, NFC

The Snapdragon 808 will be no slouch either. It will support WQXGA (2560×1600) and its Adreno 418 GPU will also support for OpenGL ES 3.1. It will also support LPDDR3 memory.

Before you get too excited about the new Snapdragon 810 and 808 processors, Qualcomm will only begin sampling in the second half of the year. It expects that devices powered by these will not launch until sometime in the first half of 2015.

Qualcomm did not reveal if we can expect to see Krait-based processors later on but it would not be something to bet against.
