TELUS acquired Public Mobile late last year in what was described as a “client-focused transaction.” Earlier this year, TELUS began to migrate the smaller carrier’s 220,000 customers away from its CDMA network over to the TELUS HSPA/LTE network. Now TELUS is taking the next step in phasing out the Public Mobile brand by shutting down its retail stores.
TELUS explained today that Public Mobile will become a “self-serve value brand.” While customers will still be able to buy service vouchers at more than 3,500 locations including gas stations and convenience stores, they will need to redeem them online or by phone. Other services such as tracking usage, changing plans and making payments will continue to be possible online and by phone.
The following statement received today by MobileSyrup explains this latest development:
“The brand will no longer have a retail presence. Customers are now able to buy service vouchers at more than 3,500 locations including gas stations and convenience stores and redeem them online or by phone for service. As part of its ongoing transition Public Mobile is becoming a self-serve value brand, offering customers more options to track usage, make changes to their plans, and make payments online and by phone.”
Anyone care to hazard a guess as to how long it will be before the Public Mobile brand disappears completely?
