Google today unveiled the Google Nexus 6, its latest Nexus smartphone and the first to run Android 5.0 Lollipop. While its 5.9-inch display and phablet dimensions may be too much for many, today’s announcement revealed another surprise that may deter many from making it their next smartphone. Motorola revealed pricing for the Nexus 6 and it is certainly not the attractive price that recent Nexus devices came with.
In Canada, it will go for CA$749 for the 32GB model and CA$799 for the 64GB one. In the U.S., the price will start around the US$650 mark.
In comparison, last year, the Google Nexus 5 went on sale for CA/US$349 for the 16GB model and CA/US$399 for the 32GB model. In other words, the Nexus 6 sells for about twice as much although it’s debatable that it’s twice as much phone (except perhaps in size).
It’s widely believed that the Google Nexus 5 was sold at cost or perhaps even subsidized to some degree by Google. At first glance, it does not appear to be the case here. It suggests that Google has realized that the Nexus brand now has value of its own as customers gravitate to it for stock Android devices which are quickly updated as new versions are released.
