As expected, device manufacturers are slowly but surely revealing their upgrade plans for Google’s upcoming Android L release. The latest to do is OnePlus. Much like HTC, it has promised to have the update ready within three months of the day that Google releases the final version.
So a lot – I mean, a lot – of people are asking about whether we’ll be getting on the Android L train. It was announced while I was asleep and when I got back to work the morning after, there were already a bunch of forum posts and (strangely) customer support requests about it.
Well, we’re keen to announce today that the OnePlus One will indeed be getting the L treatment. When, you ask? That depends on Google. We promise to have it done within three months of their releasing a final build.
Android L was announced at the Google I/O 2014 keynote and is the next major version of Google’s mobile operating system. It will bring a refreshed user interface thanks to the new Material Design guidelines, a switch from the Dalvik to ART runtime compiler for improved performance and battery life, a 64-bit architecture and further battery life improvements (under the Volta project).
With the Cyanogen team providing the software and a near stock Android experience, OnePlus is in a good position to hit its milestone. With Nexus factory images of the preview edition already available, it’s likely that Cyanogen is already hard at work.
For its part, Google is expected to release the final version of Android L sometime this fall, possibly alongside a new Google Nexus 9 tablet.
