Our fears came true Monday when OnePlus began to take OnePlus One pre-orders for the first time ever. Billed as “a historic chapter,” the company’s servers were quickly overwhelmed and the company extended the one hour pre-order window to three hours in a bid to alleviate the situation. It also recognized that this situation was “unacceptable:”
Tens of thousands of Ones are now on the way to users who successfully placed their orders and we’re thrilled they’ll soon receive their brand new phones. But we are also fully aware that the execution and experience for many of our fans was unacceptable. Despite a dedicated hardware platform set up for the event, our servers still had difficulty with the surge of traffic received when the pre-orders opened.
This is certainly not how we wanted to kick off our first ever pre-order and we are exceptionally sorry for the inconvenience caused to so many users.
The company has announced that it will hold a second pre-order on Monday, November 17 (1500 GMT) “to ensure that anyone who was unsuccessful in accessing our site yesterday can still order the One if they wish.” It also promised to have more servers ready to ensure a smoother experience this time around.
As for Canadians surprised to see their address show up in the United States during this first pre-order, OnePlus reassured them that they are reviewing and correcting the data to correct this. “Don’t worry – your data on record is correct.”
Unfortunately, it appears that OnePlus still cannot catch a break…
