This one will not come as a surprise but confirmation is nonetheless welcome. Carl Pei, Director of OnePlus Global, confirmed during a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) that the company is planning a successor to the OnePlus One. We could even see more than one smartphone and perhaps even some new devices.
Asked about a “OnePlus Two (or whatever),” Pei responded that “OnePlus 2 should be out in Q2 or Q3 of 2015.” Needless to say, nothing was revealed about it. It’s not the first time that we’ve heard about such a device though. The now retired @evleaks revealed back in July that this device was codenamed Lettuce, an apt name for the device codenamed Bacon during development.
The OnePlus 2 (or OnePlus Two) may not be the only device we see from OnePlus next year. Asked about a smaller device, Pei added, “We’ve seen a lot of people asking for a smaller device, and want to let everyone know that we hear you. We’re thinking about it.”
Asked about other devices such as a smartwatch or tablet, Pei was unsurprisingly vague: “We’re testing products in various categories, but are not sure of what we’ll release into the market.” Past rumours hinted at a OnePlus OneWatch but it’s been quiet on that front for a while now.
Pei also had some bad news for anyone hoping to get their hands without having to go through the current invitation system or the upcoming pre-order system. He said that this would not happen in 2014. “We understand that our current method may be slowing our growth down, but we’d rather grow slower and in a healthy way than taking too much risk and going out of business. Risk management is extra important in our scenario where we don’t have hardware margins.”
Here’s hoping that OnePlus has learned from a difficult 2014 and can apply those lessons in 2015 to successfully launch some new devices.
