A recent rumour suggested that BlackBerry was working on a flagship smartphone powered by a new octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The only catch was that this device would not be ready until Summer 2015. There is good news today though: A new report now suggests that this smartphone could be out much sooner. A “trusted source” has told Pocket-lint that the company is currently looking to launch it as early as September 2014.
Without naming the Snapdragon MSM8994 specifically, the source also added that it would be a 64-bit processor with built-in support for OpenGL 3. This promises dramatically improved graphics performance.
Earlier rumours identified the processor as the still-unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8994. Based on the few details available about it, it could be a true octa-core processor with 2.5GHz cores and a 64-bit architecture.
BlackBerry is also reportedly working on the all-touch Ontario and the QWERTY-keyboard Windermere which should launch before this new flagship smartphone. Before those, the entry-level Jakarta built by Foxconn is expected to launch at MWC 2014.
An octa-core BlackBerry device may not be enough to return BlackBerry to the top of the smartphone world but it might allow its devices to better stand up against those of the competition (assuming that other specifications are also as impressive).
