NVIDIA jumped into the mobile gaming console last year with the SHIELD. A year later, it appears that it will soon unveil a more powerful successor powered by its new quad-core NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor. According to France’s Minimachines, the NVIDIA SHIELD II will launch on July 22. Unlike the first version, the report adds that the NVIDIA SHIELD II will launch globally.
More interesting is the report’s claim that the NVIDIA SHIELD II will be a tablet that will be offered alongside a range of dock and controller accessories. FCC documents point to NVIDIA readying both a console and a tablet, suggesting instead that NVIDIA may soon offer both.
The NVIDIA SHIELD II was also spotted over on AnTuTu’s benchmarking database. It reveals that it will come with a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra K1 with 4GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage with a microSDXC card slot for additional storage and a 0.3MP rear camera. The display looks set for a bump in resolution from HD (1280×720) to a resolution of 1440 by 810 pixels. Noe that the device is identified as a “test model,” suggesting that specifications may still not have been finalized.
There is no word yet on pricing. The original NVIDIA SHIELD launched at a price of US$299 and can now be had for as low as US$199.
