Nokia X hits one million pre-orders in China alone

Nokia X

Nokia’s first Android smartphone looks to be well on its way to being a bonafide hit. The Nokia X, along with its Nokia X+ and Nokia XL siblings, were unveiled at Mobile World Congress late last month. Aimed at emerging markets (and to skip over North America), they are not the flagship devices that many were hoping for. Nonetheless, it appears that they will find their niche with those looking for an affordable smartphone. Nokia announced today that it has hit one million Nokia X pre-orders in China alone.

Nokia sees the Nokia X family of smartphones as a “stepping-stone” to its line of Windows Phone Lumia smartphones. While they are powered by Android, Nokia has heavily modified it and does not use the Google Mobile Services (which include apps and services such as Google Play, Gmail and Google Maps). Instead, it offers a suite of Nokia and Microsoft apps and services. Even the interface is reminiscent of Windows Phone’s tiled one.

The Nokia X will sell for €89 (about CA$135). The slightly better Nokia X+ and Nokia XL will sell for  €99 (about CA$150) and €109 (about CA$167) respectively. Along with China, they are expected to launch in Asia-Pacific, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

The Nokia X is scheduled to go on sale in China on March 25. That gives Nokia the time to possibly hit some other pre-order milestones.
