Nokia to unveil new Windows Phone 8.1 smartphones at MWC 2014?

While rumours continue to swirl about the Android-powered Nokia Normandy (aka Nokia X) and a possible announcement at its MWC 2014 event, another report has surfaced that Nokia will instead focus its attention on new Windows Phone smartphones. The not-always-reliable Digitimes today reports that Nokia will unveil new Windows Phone 8.1 smartphones at the event. Its usual “supply chain” sources suggest that both premium and entry-level devices will be announced.

At the high end will be the Lumia 1820 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 5.2-inch QHD (2560×1440) display (Digitimes lists it as qHD or Quarter HD but they likely mean QHD or Quad HD)  and a 3,400mAh. Unfortunately, there are a few issues with these specifications. First, Microsoft has yet to officially unveil Windows Phone 8.1, something that is not expected until April’s BUILD conference. Should the Lumia 1820 instead come with the current version of Windows Phone 8, the maximum resolution it can support will be Full HD (1080×1920). It also remains to be seen if Windows Phone 8.1 will even support resolutions as high as QHD. Lastly, the Snapdragon 805 launch timelines also do not appear to line up as the first devices using it are not expected until the spring.

Should the Nokia Lumia 1820 materialize, it will be accompanied by the Lumia 1520V, the rumoured mini version of the Lumia 1520 with a 4.45-inch display and 14MP camera, and the 6-inch Lumia 1525 (an updated version of the Lumia 1520 perhaps?).

With the looming Microsoft acquisition, Nokia is reportedly looking to increase smartphone shipments in 2014 to at least 10 million units.

Digitimes makes no mention of the Nokia X being announced at MWC 2014.
