Nokia to follow up Nokia X with Nokia XX and an unnamed model?

Rumoured Nokia X

Nokia is widely expected to unveil its first Android smartphone in mere days at a press event at Mobile World Congress. While it has received a level of attention normally reserved for a flagship device, all the rumours to date clearly suggest that the Nokia X will be an entry level device designed for emerging markets. A report a week ago suggested that Nokia was planning more Android phones and that they would come with better specifications. More information has now surfaced from China’s Tech.qq, the same source that first broke the story, suggesting that two additional devices are in the works.

Building on the Nokia X will be the second device which could launch as the Nokia XX. A third model, still unnamed but which is unlikely to launch as the Nokia XXX (we hope), would sport even better specifications. Despite having managed to escape the leaks that the Nokia X has experienced, both devices are already waiting in the wings and almost ready to launch. The Nokia XX could launch as early as May with the third unnamed model to follow in June.

No details are known about these more powerful Nokia Android smartphones. The Nokia X is expected to come with a 1GHz dual-core processor, a 4-inch FWVGA (480×854/~285PPI) display, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and a forked version of Android that will not come with Google Mobile services but Nokia’s own instead. It will not be very hard for Nokia to improve those specifications while still keeping the devices affordable for the emerging markets where they are also likely to be aimed.

The report adds that the Nokia X will not have to share the spotlight with its more powerful siblings at MWC 2014. It’s likely that Nokia will use this first Android smartphone to gauge the market response before deciding whether to continue in this direction.
