Following the announcement of its latest financial results, Nokia sent out press invitations to an event set to take place at MWC 2014. The invitation bearing tag line “Meet us under the tree” reveals little about what Nokia will announce at the event.
With the transaction that will see Nokia sell its mobile handset business to Microsoft for US$7.2 billion set to close this quarter, it’s not immediately clear why Nokia would hold an event at an event focused on mobile devices. Based on recent rumours and the fact that the transaction has yet to officially close, Nokia may be moving ahead with its plans as if the acquisition will not happen. If so, perhaps it will unveil the Nokia Normandy, the oft-rumoured entry-level smartphone that will be run Android. Another option could be the Verizon-bound Nokia Lumia Icon. A third could be a new device that Nokia has managed to keep under wraps (so far). It could even be a simple farewell party.
The Verge did learn from sources that Nokia had been planning to unveil the Nokia Normandy at MWC 2014. If so, it may still do so if Microsoft is ready to get behind the project (something we think it might well do).
