Nokia, or Microsoft’s newly acquired Devices business to be more accurate, today announced that it has begun to roll out the Windows Phone 8.1 Lumia Cyan update for Windows Phone 8 devices to make “your Lumia an even more personal, fun and indispensable part of your life.”
The Windows Phone 8.1 upgrade comes with a number of new features like a third column of icons, the new Action Center notification area, the new Cortana virtual assistant, and Internet Explorer 11. It also adds a number of enterprise features like support for S/MIME and the ability to use VPNs.
The Lumia Cyan update adds improvements to the Nokia Camera, Creative Studio and Storyteller app. The Nokia Lumia 520, Lumia 525, Lumia 620 or Lumia 720 will be updated to the global HERE Drive+.

While the update began today, it may still take a few weeks to hit your local market. In Canada and the U.S., the update is still listed as “under testing” for all devices except for the T-Mobile Lumia 810 which lists it as “Not available.”
Today’s announcement suggests that Cortana will only be available in the U.S. but Microsoft Canada recently indicated that it should also be ready for Canada before the rollout begins here.
