Next Samsung flagship smartphone codenamed Project Zero

Samsung Galaxy S logoSamsung is more than likely done announcing flagship smartphones for 2014 unless it has a real (but unlikely) surprise still in store for us. While the Galaxy Note 4 was just unveiled in early September, the Galaxy S5 was unveiled back in February and is getting long-in-the-tooth in terms of smartphone age. It should come as no surprise that development has begun on its sucessor. According to SamMobile, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is in the “early stages of development.” Little is known about the Galaxy S6 yet but it is reportedly codenamed Project Zero.

The new codename breaks with tradition. Samsung has in the past used single letter codenames for its flagship devices. For example, the Galaxy S4 was codenamed Project J, the Galaxy S5 was Project K and the Galaxy Note 4 was Project T. Samsung apparently decided to go with a new codename for its next flagship smartphone because it is developing it “from scratch with an entirely new vision.”

One hint surfaced last summer when rumours suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S6 would sport an all-metal build. If so, Samsung will need to solve the challenge of ensuring that it can secure sufficient capacity from its suppliers, something that has been an obstacle in the past.

While Samsung continues to sell millions of smartphones, including its flagship devices, it is the only top five smartphone manufacturer to have recorded a decline in shipments when Q3 2013 and 2014 shipments are compared. The company knows that it cannot rest on past laurels and Project Zero looks to be a sign that it knows exactly that.
