Past rumours have hinted that Sony is readying at least two new flagship smartphones for 2014. To date, few details have emerged about the devices known as Sirius and Canopus. Japan’s Blog of Mobile now reports that a Canopus variant is being readied for Japanese carrier KDDI.
The report reveals that this model, bearing model number PM-0750-BV will come with a quad-core Snapdragon 800 MSM8974-AB processor, a 5-inch display, LTE and WiMAX connectivity, dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It will be powered by Android but the specific version is not mentioned.
The Sony Canopus could launch in Japan in Q2 2014. KDDI may offer it as the SOL25. It currently offers the Xperia Z1 as the SOL23. It will presumably launch more widely as a new Xperia smartphone.
Perhaps Sony will make an announcement at MWC 2014 and unveil both the Canopus and the Sirius which could launch as the Xperia Z2 with a larger 5.2-inch display.
