Motorola and Verizon to announce new DROID devices on August 1?

Verizon DROIDVerizon unveiled its latest DROID smartphones a year ago yesterday. The three devices, the DROID Ultra, DROID Maxx and DROID mini, were our first taste of some of the features that Motorola would announce later that summer in its new flagship Moto X smartphone. With these DROIDs getting long in the tooth (in terms of smartphone lifespans), it’s likely time for some new DROID devices. A couple of rumours this week suggest we are indeed close to the two companies announcing a new DROID generation.

The first comes our very prolific leaker @evleaks. According to him, there are at least two new DROIDs coming. Both will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processors. The first, codenamed Abbagoochie, will reportedly replace the DROID Maxx while the second, codenamed Valocia, will replace the DROID mini.

The second rumour, this one courtesy of TK Tech News, reportedly gives us a launch date. According to leaked internal Verizon documents, internal training is taking place this week at the U.S. carrier ahead of an August 1 announcement.

No other devices about the new devices have been provided at this point but they are likely to retain features introduced last year, including Touchless Control, Active Display and Quick Capture.

With a DROID Maxx and a DROID mini lined up, don’t be surprised if there is a third DROID device that falls neatly between the other two as well.
