Motorola has shipped 6.5 million smartphones in Q1 2014

Motorola logoA resurgent Motorola established itself as a company to watch last year with innovative products such as the customizable Moto X. Lenovo then swooped in to buy it from Google for US$2.91 billion. While the acquisition is still going through the approval process, life goes on at Motorola. Yesterday, Motorola’s new COO Rick Osterloh revealed via Twitter that Motorola is off to a decent start in 2014 with 6.5 million smartphones shipped in the first quarter alone.

Motorola did not provide a breakdown showing sales of the Moto G and Moto X although the much cheaper but solidly built Moto G is likely accounting for the bulk of those sales. Also not clear is how many of these devices then made their way into customers’ hands.

Motorola looks to have a busy rest of 2014. It is expected to soon unveil the ultra-thin Moto E and we expect to start hearing more about a successor to the Moto X (the Moto X+1?)  in the coming weeks and months. It also announced its Moto 360 smartwatch powered by Android Wear and if it lives up to the initial hype, Motorola could have another winner on its hands.

Don’t be surprised if Motorola is back with better numbers later this year.
