The Motorola Shamu first surfaced in rumours in late July as a 5.9-inch phablet that would launch as the Google Nexus 6. Since then, it has been a regular topic for rumours with more and more details coming to light. Recent benchmarks now suggest that it will be a 5.2-inch smartphone. It now looks like we have a model number to go with everything else we know so far. The information comes to us via India’s Zauba import tracking database, a regular source of information about upcoming devices.
The sole entry shows a shipment consisting of two “Shamu phones” making their way to India for demo purposes. As is often the case, Zauba reveals little about the device itself. The only new information provided is the model number. The Motorola Shamu is identified as the Motorola XT1112.
While no specifications are revealed in the entry, past entries on a benchmark website have indicated that the Motorola Shamu will come with a 2.6GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor paired with Adreno 420 GPU, Android L (as you would expect from a Nexus device), a 5.2-inch WQHD (2560×1440) display, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 12MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera.
There is no word on when the Motorola Shamu could be announced but it is expected to be the first smartphone to ship with Android L preloaded along with the HTC-built Google Nexus 9 tablet as the first tablet to bear the same honour. An announcement could come in the fall timeframe, perhaps in late October.
