The now almost-year-old Moto X is expected to make way for the new Moto X+1 later this summer. A growing number of leaks and rumours suggests that the launch could even come sooner than later. New images including one that appears to be a promotional press render have surfaced today and potentially reveal one new feature. Best of all, these images show the Moto X+1 without a protective case as we saw in other recent images.
The press render shows little but confirms that the Moto X+1 will not be a significant departure in terms of design from the Moto X and other Motorola smartphones. A separate image shows what appears to be a front-facing speaker at the bottom of the device.
More interesting is the claim by 9to5Google that their source, the same that provide the press render, also added that Motorola could unveil the Moto X+1 at Google I/O 2014. That is earlier than expected but could make sense, especially as Google is expected to unveil the next major version of Android at the event. Motorola, still owned by Google at this point, could announce the Moto X+1 as one of the first devices to ship with the new Android version (Lollipop?).
For its part, TK Tech News reports that a shipment of Moto X+1 devices has gone missing. This may be the reason that Motorola has decided to move up the announcement. Then again, the site reported a very similar story just ahead of WWDC 2014 except that it was Apple then that had lost some iPhone 6 smartphones. The rumour did not pan out the first time and we’re very skeptical of this latest claim.
You can catch the Google I/O 2014 keynote live here to find out if Motorola does indeed unveil the Moto X+1.
