Despite some early rumours that Microsoft might retain the Nokia brand for its smartphones, it is now clear that Microsoft will in fact drop the Nokia branding. It started last month when Microsoft began to redirect Nokia.com traffic to its new Microsoft Mobile Devices website. The Verge now reports that the company is now ready to take the next step and will shortly introduce a new brand called Microsoft Lumia.
The transition to Microsoft Lumia will kick off in France where Nokia France will adopt the new brand for social media accounts such as Facebook and Twitter. Additional countries will follow in the coming weeks.
It remains to be seen how the new branding strategy will affect future Lumia devices. The Nokia logos will of course disappear but how will they be replaced will likely only be revealed the next time that Microsoft announces new Windows Phone devices.
With Microsoft adopting the well-known Lumia brand now effectively confirmed, we’ll have to see what happens to its own Surface brand seen on tablets. Perhaps it will be replaced by a more encompassing Lumia brand.
As for Nokia itself, it will continue to operate as a completely separate company with a range of offerings that includes its HERE mapping and network services.
