A post on the Nokia Conversations blog today suggests that Microsoft could be about to announce its first Android device or devices. It picked up Nokia’s line of entry-level X Phones when it acquired Nokia’s Devices and Services business earlier this year. It now appears that it could unveil some new devices in the Android-based line. The event teaser image reprises the green theme that Nokia used ahead of its own announcement back at Mobile World Congress. The tagline ‘GREEN WITH ENVY’ only builds on that.
If Microsoft is indeed about to refresh the Nokia X line, it will likely introduce the slightly more powerful Nokia X2 which has been the topic of some recent rumours. It will again be an entry-level device, this time likely boasting specifications such as a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, a 4.3-inch WVGA (480×800) display, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of RAM, a 5MP rear-camera and a 0.3MP front camera.
While the Nokia X line uses Android, it does so in the same way that Amazon does. Based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, it has been heavily modified (forked) and comes with a Windows Phone-inspired interface and Microsoft services instead of Google’s.
There is no word on pricing and availability at this point. It remains unlikely that Microsoft will bring its Nokia X devices to North America.
