MediaTek today announced the MT6595 SoC, its second octa-core System On a Chip. Unlike the MT6592 which was billed a “true octa-core SoC,” the MT6595 uses ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture with four 2.5GHz ARM Cortex-A17 and four 1.7Ghz Cortex-A7 cores. It also comes with an integrated 4G LTE Multi-Mode Modem with support for over 30 3GPP RF bands to meet operator needs worldwide.
Designed for mid-range smartphones and tablets, the Cortex-A17 promises to improve on the performance of the Cortex-A9 by about 60%. Like the A9, it is based on the ARMv7-A 32-bit architecture.
“MediaTek is focused on delivering a full-range of 4G LTE platforms and the MT6595 will enable our customers to deliver premium products with advanced features to a growing market,” said Jeffrey Ju, General Manager of the MediaTek Smartphone Business Unit.
The MT6595 SoC also comes with an integrated Imagination Technologies PowerVR Series6 GPU and a dedicated H.265 (4K2K) video encoder and decoder. It also supports resolutions up to WQXGA (2560×1600), cameras with up to 20MP sensors and Ultra HD video playback (H.264 & VP9).
MediaTek expects that its MediaTek MT6595 SoC to be commercially available by the first half of 2014 with devices to follow in the second half of the year. The company’s processors can so far be found primarily in Asia but that could change with the MT6595’s integrated LTE support and broad LTE band support.
