The already long and convoluted webOS saga looks to be taking a new and interesting turn. It may well turn out to be the operating system that simply refuses to die. Initially developed by Palm, it was then acquired by Hewlett-Packard which turned around and sold it to LG last year after failing to take advantage of its potential. At LG it made its way onto televisions earlier this year. It could soon return to its mobile roots. It appears that LG is readying a software development kit for a webOS SmartWatch.
LG jumped onto the smartwatch bandwagon earlier this year with the LG G Watch and upcoming LG G Watch R. Both are powered by Google’s Android Wear platform. It appears that LG is considering an alternative operating system. Samsung has already adopted such a strategy, using both Android Wear and its own Tizen adaptation on different models.
The developer section of LG’s website briefly featured information that revealed that it was looking at a webOS-powered LG smartwatch. It invited developers to “be the first one to share, develop, and realize imagination of the future with webOS SmartWatch.” After pulling the information down, LG told The Verge that “there are many initiatives going on at LG at any given moment. The majority of them never see the light of day.”
At the same time, LG also promises that an “LG SmartWatch gets more powerful with the new Web-centric platform.” More tantalizing is that it could be “coming soon.” Whether this is true or not remains to be seen. The smartwatch market is still in its infancy and LG could still establish webOS as a viable option if it plays its cards right.
