Rumours late last year suggested that LG was working on its own mobile processor. Codenamed Odin, it was to have come in both quad-core and octa-core configurations with the latter possibly making its way to power the LG G3. Benchmarks later revealed that performance was on par with that of the Samsung Exynos 5410 and MediaTek MT6592 and hardly performance worthy of a flagship device. Rumours about the LG Odin then went quiet except in reference to the LG G3. A report today now suggests that LG is ready to begin mass production of the Odin SoC with partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) sometime “soon.”
The report reveals little about the LG Odin except to say that it will be manufactured on a 28nm manufacturing process. However, an unnamed source suggests that the Odin will not make its way into the LG G3 but instead into low-end models. If last year’s benchmarks are any indication, the move certainly makes sense. It will also give LG a chance to see how its first processor performs before it gives it more spotlight.
Assuming that the report is legitimate, it brings up the question of what processor the LG G3 could use. One possibility that has already been hinted at is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805.
