Smartwatches have been one of the most exciting new product categories to emerge in 2014. While most still rely on a smartphone for connectivity, Samsung took the smartwatch one step further by giving the Gear S its own cellular connectivity earlier this year. Perennial rival LG now looks set to unveil a direct competitor early next year. According to unnamed Business Korea sources, LG could announce the LG G Watch R2 at MWC 2015 in early March.
While little is known about the LG G Watch R2 (even its name is still tentative), the report indicates that it will sport LTE connectivity. This would trump the Samsung Gear S which is limited to 3G connectivity (although Samsung may have a successor of its own waiting in the wings).
The name suggests that the LG G Watch R2 will be a successor to the original LG G Watch R (pictured above). If so, we can expect it to once again feature a round design and make use of Android Wear.
Should LG indeed unveil an LTE-enabled smartwatch, it will be interesting to see how it fares when it comes to battery life.
