LG G Watch to come with cellular connectivity?

LG G WatchOne device that was mentioned a few times without making it to the stage today at the LG G3 launch event was the LG G Watch. While LG has been teasing features of the upcoming smartwatch in preparation for a launch later this summer, one of its most interesting features may be one that LG has yet to reveal. According to Korea’s iNews24, it may come with its own USIM module (Universal Subscriber Identity Module), allowing it make and receive calls without having to connect to another device to do so.

When we checked with a source that has provided reliable information to us in the past, we were told that LG is working on a number of LG G Watch variants. A model with built-in SIM card is indeed being planned and could launch as the LG-W105L. An international model will launch as the LG-W100.

The report adds that Korean carrier LG U+ could be among the first to offer the LG G Watch.

Past rumours have indicated that the LG G Watch will come with a 1.65-inch display with a resolution of 280 by 280 pixels and 4GB of internal memory. Pricing could come as low as US$199 (about CA$220).

Assuming the report and our source are accurate, LG would not be the only company working on a standalone phonewatch. Samsung is reportedly working on a similar product called the Gear 2 Solo. Like the LG G Watch, it could launch later this summer.

Thanks, tipster!
