LG Display to manufacture Apple iWatch display?

Apple iWatch concept

Apple has been rumoured to be working on a smartwatch of its own for quite some time now. In another sign that Apple could finally unveil the so-called iWatch in 2014, Korean news site DDaily today reported that LG Display may have been selected to be the sole supplier for its OLED display. It follows a similar report back in October 2013 that had the two companies working together on the iWatch.

According to the report, LG will produce a 1.52-inch flexible iWatch display using its P-OLED or Plastic OLED technology. This is the same technology that LG uses for the display of its curved and flexible LG G Flex smartphone. The iWatch may well end up with a curved display as the one on the concept above.

Mass production will reportedly start sometime in the third quarter with initial volumes set for some 2 million units. Given the recent (lack of) success other manufacturers have had with smartwatches, that number does appear high. Then again, this is Apple we’re talking about here.

The report should be taken with a healthy pinch of salt. Not only does it sit squarely in the realm of rumour but the original DDaily report has also been pulled down for an unspecified reason. Fortunately, Google was able to cache it before it disappeared.
