It took nearly a year but Motorola today has a new owner, China’s Lenovo. The Motorola acquisition was first announced back in January 2014 when Google agreed to sell the mobile device manufacturer to Lenovo for US$2.91 billion. Motorola will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Lenovo and remain headquartered in Chicago’s Merchandise Mart. As had been expected, the iconic Motorola brand will live on as will the Moto and DROID franchises.
In Lenovo we have a partner that shares our mission and that brings global scale, a diverse product portfolio and a track record of seizing strategic opportunities and making the most of them. Together we will go farther, faster. With an impressive portfolio of smartphones, wearables and PCs, our two companies will be uniquely positioned to push the boundaries of choice and value, and bring exciting new experiences to people everywhere.
Motorola promises to “continue to focus on pure Android and fast upgrades, and remain committed to developing technology to solve real consumer problems.”
It will be interesting to see what Motorola can do with Lenovo’s backing and significant global resources. Its first announcement as a Lenovo company will take place next week in Brazil when it is expected to unveil the Moto Maxx, a global version of the recently launched Verizon DROID Turbo.
