What a difference a month can make. Google today published the latest edition of the Google Android Platform Versions report and Android KitKat has jumped from 13.6% to 17.9%. As impressive as the jump is, there is even better news. KitKat is finally on more devices than the aging Gingerbread release which now stands at 13.5%.
Not only are new devices preloaded with Android 4.4 KitKat now launching in growing numbers but manufacturers have also released KitKat updates for a growing number of devices, helping it jump to current heights. With a few months still to go before we see Android L, we can expect KitKat’s share to continue to grow over the summer and into fall while Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread all continue to drop away.
Apple’s iOS distribution numbers continue to show a stark contrast where the latest version of iOS dominates. At the same time, distribution numbers did not change from the previous report. iOS 7 remains at 89%, iOS 6 at 9% and earlier releases at 2%.
Apple and Google publish their platform version reports on a monthly basis to help developers plan what versions of the operating systems in their apps. It also gives us a glimpse at the state of the Android and iOS universes at a specific point in time.
