The first Android Platform Versions report of 2014 has been published. It once again tracks the devices that accessed the Google Play Store in the prior 7 days and provides a summary of the Android versions seen over that span of time.
Since the last report was published just over a month ago, Android Jelly Bean (4.1.x to 4.3) has continued to appear on more devices. Its share jumped 4.6% percent to 59.1%.
Android 4.4 KitKat increased its share to 1.4%. With only a limited number of devices shipping with it or with upgrades available for them, it will still take some time for the latest version of Android to catch up.
Older versions of Android continue to hold their own sadly too well. Gingerbread (2.3.3 to 2.3.7), now three years old, still accounts for nearly a quarter of the versions at 21.2% with Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.3 to 4.0.7) taking another 16.9%. Both are steadily dropping but it will be some time yet before they disappear off this chart.
In comparison, Apple shows that , as of December 29, 2013,78% of iOS devices are now running iOS 7.
Google regularly publishes the Android Platform Versions report to help developers decide versions of Android to support in their apps. It also gives us a snapshot at the state of the Android universe at a specific point in time.
