Japan Display ready to ship 5.5-inch WQHD display for mobile devices

Japan Display 5.5-inch WQHD display

Japan Display (JDI) is the latest company to announce a WQHD display. Its 5.5-inch WQHD LCD display module is set to begin production and will begin shipping in April. The new display panels will be manufactured using the company’s enhanced low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) technology which promises both “high transmittance and low power consumption.”

The camera device and image processing technologies incorporated in smartphones are becoming increasingly sophisticated with every day. It is now possible to enjoy high quality images on large displays in excess of 5-inches. The product in question boasts a world-class screen resolution of 538 ppi among the volume production products. It reproduces photo images and videos more realistically than in the Full-HD format with a resolution of 1,080 horizontal pixels x 1,920 vertical pixels on smartphone displays.

JDI did not announce what smartphone manufacturers might use the new panel. With a number of WQHD smartphones being hinted at, a number of companies could be lining up to use it. Among them could also be Apple which is rumoured to be working on a 5.5- to 5.7-inch phablet along with a new iPhone with a 4.7- or 4.8-inch display.

JDI also announced that it plans to release “a number of WQHD products” this year, suggesting that we will see other display sizes in the coming months. It adds that these new WQHD display will lead to a “new leading-edge range” of smartphones. Among these could be the 5.4- and 6.2-inch panels that JDI announced last October.

LG also unveiled a 5.5-inch WQHD display last August. It could use it in its upcoming LG G3 smartphone.
