Shortly after HTC unveiled the HTC One (M8) earlier this week, a video surfaced that showed the latest HTC flagship smartphone being submerged with no apparent ill effect. No mention was made of waterproof capabilities during HTC’s press event and the feature was even downplayed by HTC Product Manager Graham Wheeler in an interview with Trusted Reviews: “It’s a beautiful phone, and I think that’s more important than waterproofing,” he told them.
Waterproofing smartphones is a growing trend among flagship devices. Sony has been doing it since 2013’s Sony Xperia Z and Samsung jumped on the bandwagon with the Samsung Galaxy S5. While HTC has not committed to full waterproofing, it has made the HTC One (M8) water resistant. Jeff Gordon, HTC’s Senior Global Online Communications Manager, confirmed via Twitter that the smartphone is IPx3 certified.
The HTC One (M8) IPx3 rating means it's protected from water spray up to 60 degrees at 10l per minute, pressure of 80-100kN/m2 up to 5 mins.

This rating is enough to offer protection from spraying water and more specifically, “water spraying up to 60 degrees from vertical at 10 liters/min at a pressure of 80-100kN/m2 for 5 min.”
While we now know that the HTC One (M8) can withstand a good splashing, water resistant is not the same as waterproof. Leaving your HTC One (M8) submerged in water for any period of time is still not a good idea but at least we know that it won’t be afraid of a little rain.
